LITTLE LOOP – Day 10
Spending the night at the lower side of Narrows Lock turned out to be a really good choice…
Quiet and remote seems to now be our preferred stop at the end of the day.
Up at the crack of 0800hrs, and ready to go by the time the lock crew was on site
and ready to open the gates for us to proceed…
Our first rainy day but it was a pleasant change
from the hot sun of the past fews days…
…always ready for whatever the sea gods dish out….
Instead of heading in the direction of the 36th Lock at Newboro,
we made a small detour to the pretty village of Westport.
…the Westport welcoming committee…
Picked up our fishing license
and some more provisions,
poked around the shops for a while,
then headed out again.
Next lock-through
Since Ottawa, we have be going up river.
Now at Newboro we begin the descent to Kingston Mills…
Buoys now port/starboard reversed.
…no special statement here – just thought this was worth a picture…
At Chaffeys Lock (# 37) we topped up our fuel
and ran into some boat friends going back up the river,
chatted for a while then were on our way again.
We reached Davis Lock (# 38) by 1500hrs
but had a brief wait while they replaced one of the locking cables.
Since there wasn’t enough time left to reach and pass the 3 locks at Jones Falls
we slowly motored the 5 nm to dock on the high end of the falls.
…the route at times is very narrow and winding…
a bit of signage helped guide us…
We fished…
(I actually caught a fair sized sun fish –
yes, I did, I really did…no fish story…honest)
We dined…
(Homemade pizza on the barbecue
in the wilderness of the Rideau tastes SO good)
We went for a little walk…
Stone Arch Dam…
(finished in 1831, a great feat of engineering in its day)
…Madame Tortue – right in the middle of the road…
(by the time we headed back to the boat she had made surprising headway)
We bathed in the lake…
We weathered another small storm…
All alone yet again…
